Orion III spaceplane
Based on the famous spacecraft in 2001: A Space Odyssey, the Orion III spaceplane is an effort to bring that design into being with currently available technology. It uses engines under development by the European space agency, and the main other change from the movie version is the addition of vertical stabilizers. It is designed to bring 24 passengers, along with up to 4 crew members, to low Earth orbit. It is initially carried by the Orion Carrier Plane, then decouples from it to continue on to orbit.
The spaceplane can also be refueled in orbit by one launch of Starship, in which case it can fulfill the same mission as the Shinkansen spaceplane – to transfer to the Moon and then return to low Earth orbit.
